9 Sustainable Packaging Ideas for Every Pet Food Brand
Pet food packaging must prevent oxidation and moisture, contain aromas, survive shipping and remain convenient after opening. Brands must achieve this while reducing waste and making environmental claims they can prove.
This is no longer a niche concern. A European survey of 1,693 pet food shoppers found that 69% considered packaging sustainability important when choosing pet food. Regulation is moving in the same direction: the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is intended to make packaging placed on the EU market recyclable by 2030.
The practical question is not simply, "Which material looks green?" It is: Which sustainable packaging option can protect this product for its full shelf life, run on the intended packing line, and enter a real recovery system in the market where it is sold? These nine ideas address dry food, treats, supplements and wet pet food.
1. Start With the Product, Not the Sustainability Claim
Before selecting a pouch, define what the food needs. Dry kibble usually requires moisture, oxygen and aroma protection. High-fat treats need stronger oxygen and grease resistance. Freeze-dried food is highly sensitive to moisture. Wet food may require retort sterilization and exceptionally reliable seals.
Record the shelf life, fill weight, storage, distribution channel and opening pattern. A 100 g treat pouch does not need the same structure as a 10 kg e-commerce dog food bag. Choose the lightest structure that passes product-specific testing.
Buyer tip: Ask for OTR, WVTR, seal-strength and puncture data with the test conditions included. "High barrier" without numbers is a description, not a specification.
2. Replace Mixed Laminates With Mono-Material Pouches Where Possible
Conventional pet food bags often combine PET, PE, nylon, aluminum or barrier layers that are difficult to separate. Mono-material packaging uses one main polymer family while still allowing several functional layers.
CEFLEX guidance favors mono-PE and mono-PP because they generally sort and recycle better than mixed-polymer laminates. Mono-PE is widely considered for dry food and treats; mono-PP can support applications needing greater heat resistance.
3. Use a Recyclable Flat Bottom Pouch for Premium Dry Food
For dry food and functional treats, a recyclable flat bottom pouch provides a stable, box-like shape. Five printable panels accommodate nutrition, feeding and disposal information plus brand design without an outer carton.

4. Add Reclosability to Prevent Food Waste After Opening
A poorly closed pack admits moisture and oxygen, damaging texture, aroma and nutrition. Reclosable zippers or sliders help protect multi-serve products throughout use.
Treat the closure as part of the recycling design. Prefer a compatible PE or PP closure, then test repeated opening, crumb contamination and end-of-use sealing.
For small treats and freeze-dried products, a recyclable stand-up zipper pouch may be the simplest solution. For medium and large dry-food formats, flat bottom or quad seal construction provides additional stability.
5. Right-Size the Pack and Reduce Empty Space
A pouch that is larger than necessary consumes extra film, warehouse space and transport capacity. Compare packaging weight per kilogram of product, not just one empty bag.
Leave enough headspace for filling and sealing. Over-thinning can cause punctures and returns. Prototype with the real food, weight and equipment. Bulk sizes reduce packaging per serving but require stronger seams and transport tests.
6. Use Recyclable Retort Pouches for Suitable Wet Pet Food
Wet food is difficult to redesign. A retort pouch must withstand heat, pressure and moisture while maintaining a hermetic seal. Aluminum-containing laminates protect well but are difficult to recycle through conventional plastic streams.
New mono-PP structures provide a route for selected products. 7. Use PCR Content Only With Traceability and Food-Contact Evidence
PCR resin can reduce virgin plastic demand, but high PCR content is not automatically suitable for direct food contact. Packaging must control contaminants, migration and consistency. The US FDA evaluates recycled plastic processes case by case.
Ask where PCR is used, whether a functional barrier is required, how it is traced and which food-contact documents apply. "Made with 30% post-consumer recycled plastic" is more credible than a vague recycled-material claim.

8. Treat Paper, Compostable Films and Printing as Product-Specific Tools
Paper sacks, certified fiber cartons and compostable films can help in selected cases. Yet coatings, windows and liners can change paper's recycling route. Compostable films may suit light, shorter-life treats, but many require industrial composting.
Use an FSC-certified carton only when protection, grouping or delivery requires it. Compare printing waste for the actual order: digital can reduce setup waste for short runs, while optimized gravure may suit large volumes. Keep windows, inks and coatings compatible with the recycling design.
9. Validate the Whole Package Before Making a Recyclability Claim
A recyclable pouch is a system. Review its body, closure, label, ink, adhesive, metallization, handle and valve. APR guidance recommends assessing every feature without assuming consumers will dismantle or extensively clean the pack.
Then run a controlled transition:
- Document the current structure, product risks and target market.
- Agree on measurable barrier, seal and transport requirements.
- Produce samples and test them with the actual food.
- Run the material on the intended filling and sealing line.
- Complete shelf-life and distribution validation.
- Confirm food-contact documents and region-specific recycling language.
Avoid broad claims such as "100% eco-friendly." The FTC Green Guides require environmental marketing claims to be truthful, substantiated and appropriately qualified. "Designed for recycling in compatible PE film streams; check local collection options" tells customers more and creates less legal and reputational risk.
